androgyne
The androgynous is an anthropomorphic representation of the primordial being, half man, half woman. It is present in the myth of the Cosmic Egg, the source and finish of the universal creation. It represents the unity and plenitude, of the fundamental state, a place where the pairs of contraries are merged together into a perfect unity, either potential or manifested. The duality of the world we experience is false, illusory and deceiving. It constitutes the world of sin, and salvation can only be found in the complete merger in the state of perfect Unity. The androgynous is often represented as a couple or as a half man half woman human being. In Tantra we can find many representations of the divine couple SIVA - SAKTI in ecstatic sexual union, a symbol of the perfect unity of the two opposed but complementary principles : feminine and masculine, night and day, YIN and YANG, conscience and energy. By their perfectly balanced union the two fundamental principles become the WHOLE, the fundamental ONE, the transcendent. On the tantric spiritual path the adepts seek to develop in perfect harmony and balance both their masculine aspects (ex. mental focus, will, intellect) and feminine aspects (ex. sensitivity, emotion). They also create couples (man - woman) based on love and the practice of sexual continence which allows the access to the supreme ecstasy, in couple.
